Scientists explain how the brain adapts to unforeseen situations

When affronting a new situation, the brain creates a special type of neural network that is “ready” for any eventuality.

Scientists from the French Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) have discovered in a study published in the journal ‘PLOS Computational Biology’ that, in affronting a new situation, the brain creates a special type of neural network.

They have detailed that, when the brain detects a new situation, it activates neural connections, forming a “reserve” network in which multiple neuronal impulses repel or combine to generate a unique combination of impulses that can be used to generate the adecuate behavior against an unknown situation or scope.

The ability to adapt their behavior to the new environment in a way that is not predicted by evolution is one of the most remarkable features of the behavior of primates, including humans.

The prefrontal cortex of the brain controls the mental and motor activity. This part of the brain makes it possible to design action plans, make decisions and model behaviors and social interactions.
